Is it supposed to smell burned clutch when I do the following SEPARATELY:

1. Rev my 996 on FIRST GEAR with the Clutch floored OR
2. WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING ON 2ND GEAR, go on 4,000 or so RPMs on second gear THEN SHIFT TO THIRD GEAR.

My 996 gives me the burnt clutch smell when I do these and I get mixed responses if it's normal or not. I have a Supra as well and it doesn't give me that smell when I do the same thing.

Is this something different on the 996 that you have to treat the clutch differently? The clutch was already replaced twice in this car within 2 years and I don't want to end up doing it the third time.

Hopefully I get inputs in here for other Porsche owners. Thank you.

In one simple word, no. None of that is supposed to happen. How high up are you revving it with the clutch pressed in, and for how long?

Also, are you doing a hard pull to 4K RPM in second gear, or climbing gradually, or are you just coasting?

The clutch was all the way down and I do a quick rev at I think around 5,000. Also, it's second gear from 2,000 to 5,000 and change to third gear. You know a little push to feel some G force.

I could easily blame my driving habits but I sooo rarely do this and sooo rarely use my car. Plus, I do the same with my Supra and don't smell anything.

I'm not sure if this is related but my 2nd gear once in a while slips. Thanks!

From everything I know you should not be smelling clutch. Now I can not say there is anything wrong with the car as I have not seen you driving it, but it doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. Is it a brand new clutch by any chance?

Yes it is brand new. Now this is what I've been told and I can't verify it myself coz is well hid in our car. I just went with what the shop said. Yhe shop is a reputable company here in Irvine and have freat Yelp reviews. So I don't think they will risk that reputation for a simple clutch replacement.

Do you have any idea how I would visually check to verify that the clutch is really replaced? Thank you.

I made some clarification on my inquiry, they are on caps. Maybe this will you better understand what I'm doing.

Sorry been busy. But Aren is correct. You shouldn't ever smell burnt clutch during any rpm range, you'll be needing a new clutch. Pm and I'll quote u pricing for repair.

A new clutch again after 8,000 miles. I don't even drive this hard! What can cause this CJ? Thank you so much.

Hmmm well 8k is really premature (Aren style) to wear out. You should probably bring it in so I can make sure it isn't anything less costly.

My experience with the 996 NA with a brand new or even used clutch is that they are not design to handle the load of a "burn-out" on a dry road. You WILL get a burnt clutch smell while trying to do so, the easiest way to know if your clutch is going is when it starts to get hard to press....

If you're unsure if you pedel is getting hard just get a hold of me when I'm around and I'd be happy to check and compare.
