The End of the Road for S2K
Officially: Honda S2000 to be terminated at the end of 2009 MY
The 2009 Honda S2000 will be the final model year produced of the award-winning roadster, Honda announced today. First introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year, the S2000 helped define its segment with class-leading handling, engine technology and value. Originally envisioned as a limited-edition tribute to Honda's 50th anniversary, S2000 production was extended in response to customer demand and critical acclaim.

They pulled another NSX on it. Honda likes doing that. 10 years this car has been around and pretty much nothing has changed on it. Sure the displacement got bumped once from 2.0 to 2.2, but that is not enough of a difference. Come to think of it, this car went exactly the same way the NSX did, all they had to do was change the headlights for the last couple of years and bam you would have had a mirror image of the NSX story.
Oh well, sad to see it go though, it was a great little weekend car.

Well, I can see that. The DelSol was originally a CRX remake anyway. By the way, the interior reminded me of my 93 DelSol, a lot. So yes, but the issue still stands that Honda made an amazing car, especially for the price, and then let it completely fall on its face by not doing updates on it.

Interesting, I have thought for some time that the S2000 is a bit dated but didn't expect Honda to axe it. I'm curious though, are they likely to introduce another two seater convertible aimed at the MX-5 market, if I was Mr Honda, I would.
Mind you, when I heard Toyota were pulling the plug on the MR2, I expected them to come back with a serious MX-5 rival.

I think most auto manufactures are a bit scared to do anything drastic right now. The big thing I see is the green cars, consumers can still purchase to save.
Perfect timing to put out green cars if you ask me....

Not really Eli, the green fad is starting to slowly come back down as gas prices have dropped. Regardless Honda is working on a Hybrid CRX type vehicle. The problem with the S2000 was that it was too raw. While this will please the enthusiast, it does not move cars off the lots too fast. Especially at a 35K price tag. The S2000's bigger problem was that there was no automatic transmission option. That in itself killed a lot of sales.
There were also issues with the dated interior and lack of interior space. The car just did not offer any real comforts for its relatively high 30K to 35K price range.
