Are Porsche's reliable. I am considering purchasing my first carrera s cabriolet 06' from a dealer that is certified pre-owned. Will the maintenance costs be outrageous. How long does the clutch last 100,000 miles? Just want to make sure if I put down $70,000 for a car that it won't be breaking down all the time. My friend had a 04' carrera and the engine blew with smoke everywhere... Just don't want that to happen to me[/b]

Welcome to Pcars. Porsche's in general are reliable and I would say from all the high performance European makes, it is probably the most reliable.
The 04 model is a 996.2 with a reliable 3.6 engine, so I am not sure how many miles your friends car had before the engine blew up. Also how the car was maintained and driven will make a difference.
The 06 Carrera S is a 997.1 with a 3.8 engine and it is very powerful for a naturally aspirated 911 with a proven reliability record. Since you are buying certified pre-owned, you should have no worries. Porsche offers one of the best po warranties in the industry. Just make sure you have a pre-purchase inspection done at a local independent Porsche shop to get a second opinion (never hurts).
They can be reliable or they can be unreliable. From the factory, for the most part, they are reliable. That is not counting an odd lemon or two, but a lot has to do with the owner of the car. If an owner does not take care of their car then bad things can and usually will happen. Since you are getting a certified pre-owned, I would not worry too much about it. Make sure to get a warranty as well, nothing beats piece of mind. Just make sure to drive the car responsibly and keep up with the maintenance and you will be good.
It is a Porsche so the costs will be significantly more than your average Camry, but if you use a good independent shop, those costs can be manageable. You are looking at roughly 150 to 170 for oil changes done about once a year or 15K, whichever comes first.
Then there are the brakes which will usually set you back about 500 all around for parts and labor. Assuming you don't need new disks.
Even the cost of a clutch and labor can be mitigated. I think the price that I saw thrown around was about 1500 or so, but I could be wrong and I think that was with non-Porsche Genuine parts. Eli can help you further in that area when he comes back on here.
Off course the dealership will give discounts. I was at the dealership two days ago to checkout a 997 GT3 and they are willing to go below MSRP. With this economy most dealership will but it depends on how rare the car too. This is case to case basis.
